Selecting the Best Material for Your Countertops
At Countertops and Cabinetry by Design we believe the material that is BEST for you is usually the one that suits the way you live and the way that you will use it.
If you are looking for a countertop for your kitchen and you love to cook, you will likely want a material that is stain resistant and easy to clean.
When your looking for a countertop that adds a WOW Factor choosing a stone with flowing color and detail will outway stain resistance.
There are materials available to enable you to achieve the look, feel and functionality you want and need.
We listed the basic material classes below to give you a starting point in your journey.


Plastic laminate Countertops
For the past 70 years Plastic Laminate Countertops have been the affordable option for almost any home. There are numerous brands of laminate that are all made using the same basic manufacturing process. Formica Brand Laminate made the laminate countertops popular in the 1940’s and 50’s. Its available in thousands of colors and patterns to suite almost any taste.

- Affordable.
- Stain Resistant
- Durable.
- Many Design Options
- Low Maintenance
Disadvantages
- Looks inexpensive.
- Usually requires a diagonal seam at each corner.
- Not repairable.
- Can be Damaged by heat easily.
Solid Surface Countertops
Solid surface is a non-porous surface offering many design and performance advantages. The raw material is a sheet-good that can be cut, shaped and fabricated by a professional fabricator using techniques similar to woodworking. The sheets can also be thermoformed (heated and bent) into various shapes. This makes the material an excellent option for sinks, countertops, shower pans, wall dividers, workstations, backsplashes, bathtubs and numerous other designs.
We recommend Corian Solid Surface by Dupont or Lx Hausys Hi Macs Solid Surface because they are both 100% Acrylic.

- Durable.

- Renewable / Refinishable
Disadvantages
- Cuts or Scratches Easy.
- Can be Damaged by heat.


Quartz Countertops
Quartz Countertops are a manufactured stone that is comprised of about 63% quartz stone by volume. The additional 37% that is binders and fillers is what gives quartz the non-porous surface that stands up to most spills and everyday use and is the reason that it will never need to be sealed. When choosing quartz material to use on your countertop, pick a brand that will stand behind the fabricator and ultimately stand behind you in the event of a warranty claim. We recommend Lx Hausys Viatera, Corian Quartz and StoneMart Quartz because of our longstanding relationships and the fact that we NEVER have issues with the products. They cover just about every color option and the products is almost always available.

- Easy to Maintain
- stands up to minor heat.
- Somewhat repairable.
- Many Design options.
Disadvantages
- Can be Damaged by extreme heat.
Granite Countertops
Granite Countertops are extracted from the earth. The blocks are sliced and polished and delivered to the fabricator to custom cut into the shape of your countertop. Granite is known for its beauty and elegance and the ability to stand the test of time. CAC by Design’s granite countertops are the best choice when selecting granite for your home.

- Durable / Resist scratches
- Heat Resistant
- Many Design Options.
- Available in many finishes.
Disadvantages
- Needs to be sealed.
- Susceptible to Stains
- Its HARD – If you drop something on it… (its going to break)


Tile Countertops
Tile Countertops are the goto countertop surface for the DIY. With unlimited choices you are only limited by your imagination.
Advantages
- Affordable.
- Easy to install.
- Available in unlimited patterns.
Disadvantages
- Looks inexpensive.
- Many grout lines to be cleaned and maintain.
- Chips easy
Wood (Butcher Block) Countertops
Wood “Butcher Block” Countertops are a beautiful option. They are available in many colors and wood species.
Advantages
- Durable
- Repairable / Refinishable
- Many color options
- Warm to touch
- Heat Resistant
Disadvantages
- Cuts/Scratches Easy
- Stains Easy
- Susceptible to moisture damage
